Utila flower of Utila; paradise or hell?

By Gunter Kordovsky

If you listen to our HQTV Anchorman he will tell you nightly that we are living in Paradise with a few minor problems and all is well and the people are sooooo nice??? Unfortunately too many seem to bury their head into the sand mentally, ignoring the obvious facts. Major crimes such as rape and robberies are not uncommon on the rock and are treated like misdemeanors, what I have seen of so called Justice over the last few decades has been a farce at best! It is a joke to call it justice.

I still recall the brutal murder or our former chief of police and a few other murders. Excuse me HQ but does that reflect paradise? Does that reflect a Christian Community with a Church on every corner and bible toting fanatics? How can a so-called Christian Community, as some would like to think Utila is, tolerate such conditions? Very simple answer, our former major once said in one of his speeches; we are a Christian Community, lets act like one. I am asking all you Bible toting Religious Fanatics of various denominational Brands are you acting on the Word and standing up for what is right? Remember, all it takes for Evil to prosper is for man to do nothing.

Let me quote Dr. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries, Florida. He said the problem today is that most Christians and pastors are cowards. Yes you heard me right COWARDS. We have let things slide so long on Utila that the revolting behavior of our troublemakers (unthinkable when I arrived on the beautiful island) is now the norm. There seems to be a competition on the streets of Utila for who can sound the most vulgar and profane? How many profanities can one jam into one sentence to be cool?

How could a once quaint, clean little moral community degenerate to such a level where anything goes and the scum of society are the heroes? The answer lies as always in the good book and for you heathens who don’t know the bible let me quote a few scripture verses out of Proverbs, the book of wisdom. Since the problems we are facing are related to child rearing and home lets see what our maker has to say:

Prov 23:13 Don’t hesitate to discipline a child. A good spanking won’t kill him; as a matter of fact it may save his life.

Prov 29:15 Correction and discipline are good for children. If a child has his own way he will make his mother ashamed of him.

How is our so-called Christian community doing it? We are pampering the criminals and let the kids run wild. I always hear the lame excuse, well it is bad everywhere. Not true, only where the cowards run the show. Before I go on. Let me share one more scripture verse with you about how the Lord thinks the low lives should be treated. It might shock you!

Dout 21:18 Concerning a disobedient son

Suppose someone has a disobedient son who is stubborn and rebellious, a son who will not obey his parents, even though they punish him. His parents are to take him before the leaders of the town where he lives and make him stand trial. They are to say to the leader, our son is stubborn and rebellious and refuses to obey us; he wastes money and is a drunkard. Then the men of the town are to stone him to death and so you would be rid of that evil (quote from the old testament). Did that shock you, I hope it did. Are we lucky to live under grace? I remember the old Utilians who were no nonsense guys and had a remedy for that kind of character. It was called a "Duppy assn" and was very effective. In the army we called it "the blanket". Of course our cowards don’t have the backbone to stand up to the juvenile delinquents who tell you "you can’t do me nuttin’!" in the best Utila English.

Well folks, that brings me to the second part of my article. Don’t worry, no more bible thumping. I’ve been invited to several meetings lately concerning the security of our visitors, who hold up the economy of this island. Thanks to our criminal elements and their activities we have the honor to be called ‘Burglar Bay’ and are being avoided by sailors at all costs.

Congratulations Christian Community we have arrived! One of many outraged expats is Neil Keller, owner of the Wonderland, artist par excellence who is finishing possibly the most attractive museum in Honduras, has called the meetings. Mostly concerned locals and expats showed up and pondered solutions to the crime problem on Utila. Feeble efforts are made to put the situation into the hands of the bureaucrats. Having been in similar meetings for many years I haven’t seen much progress. And the Fiscales seem to be more of a problem than a solution. As long as this community does not get together, yes, I said Together and show those criminal elements that crime does not pay on Utila it will get worse, like on Roatan. Let’s stop being a bunch of pathetic cowards and give that scum of society what’s needed. Justice.

Remember the police and the Major can not do it alone. They need your help honorable citizens of Utila. United we stand! Let your voice be known. Say that you are as disgusted as we are with the criminal and decadent behavior on the streets of Utila. We count on your support. Stand up for what’s right even if you have to stand alone. Don’t advocate what a great Christian you are by brandishing your Bible on Sunday in church but don’t have the backbone to stand up for justice. The lord has no use for cowards.

Rev 21:8 But cowards, traitors, perverts, murderers, the immoral, those who practice magic, worship idols and all liars which includes gossip and slanderers will be cast in the lake of fire burning with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.

You notice that he puts cowards first. So don’t think going to church and brandishing your Bible will do you any good if you don’t stand up FOR JUSTICE AND WHATS RIGHT? See you at the next meeting. May god help Utila if we keep going down.
